How to choose a calculator

Match the shape of the job, not just the material name. Slabs and pads use rectangular volume; post holes and Sonotubes use cylinders; mulch beds use area × depth; fence and deck tools count pieces. Each page shows the formula, a worked example, waste or compaction caveats, and cited sources. Prefer the dedicated tool over forcing one calculator to do another’s job.

Waste factors (often 5–10%), rock density, and bag yields vary by product and region. Treat every result as a planning estimate and confirm labels, supplier tickets, and local code before you buy. Full formula notes live on each tool page and in methodology.

Concrete calculators

Use these when you need cubic yards and 40/60/80 lb bag counts. Example: a 10×10 ft patio at 4 inches is about 1.23 cu yd (~62 × 80 lb bags after 10% waste at standard QUIKRETE yields).

Landscape material calculators

Convert bed or path area × depth into yards, tons, or bags. Example: 100 sq ft of mulch at 3 inches is about 0.93 cu yd (roughly thirteen 2 cu ft bags).

Outdoor structure calculators

Takeoffs for fence runs, decks, roof pitch/shingles, paint, and retaining-wall blocks. Example: a 48 ft fence at 8 ft spacing needs 7 posts before gates.

Lawn & garden calculators

Seed and fertilizer from rates per 1,000 sq ft, plus raised-bed soil volume. Example: 5,000 sq ft at 3.5 lb seed/1,000 needs 17.5 lb of seed (override with your bag rate).
